Front Range Equine Rescue (frer)
this is a letter I got from FRER and I am hoping you will ALL take the time to read this and help save the wild horses and burros
Dear Fellow Horse Lovers,
Thousand of wild horses in the West continue to be rounded up -and many will end up slaughter - because if tge 2004 Burns amendment
That's why I urge you to sign and return the enclosed "Save the Wild Horses" petition addressed to the secretary of the Interior, Dirk Kempthorne. Your petition is part of the broader campaign Front Range is waging to protect the American Mustand and also to end horse slaughter in our country.
Before Last year's election, the Hour of Representatives passed a bill outlawing horse slaughter, but the Senate failed to act because of the pressure from lobbyists.
Many of these same lobbyists put pressure on the Bureau of Land Management (BLM)- under the jurisdiction of Interior Department - to increase the rounduos of wild horse herds in the West.
Your petition asks the secretary of the Interior to stop the rounduos of wild hroses that are decimating many wild horse herds... including Cloud's famous herd in the Pryor Mountains of Montana.
at the turn of the century, around two million wild horses roamed freely in the West. But just like the buffalo, wild horses and burros were hunted down and their numbers dwindled to just a few thousand.
then, Velma Johnston, later nicknamed "Wild Horse Annie," took decisive action that would end theis cuel treatment of wile horses.
One day wile driving to work in 1950, a truck hauling horses cut in fromt of Annie's car. she noticed a stream of blood dripping from the truck. shocked by hte trail of blood, annie fallowed the truck to the slaughterhouse. Hiding behind a bush, Annie noticed a young horse down in the truck who was being trampled to death by horses packed too tightly to move. Annie was out raged by this creily and set out to change the course of history.
She mobilized a massive write-in campaign to the members of Congress- especailly from millions of schoolchildren- that lead to the passage of legislation to protect wild horses.
The mail generated to Capitol Hill to save America's wild hroses was the largest for any cause except the Vietnam War. It shows the pawer ordinary citizens and even young people can have when they exert pressure on congress.
in 1995 tge Associated Press said regarding Wild HOrse Annie's camoaaign to save wild horses. "seldom has an issure touched such a respinsive chord."
But unfortunately, Wild Horse Annies legacy of protecting our wild horses was jeopardized becuase of last year's do-nothing Senate and overzealous government officials who gave rubber stap approval for the cruel roundups.
thats why it is critical that you sign and return the enclosed petition...
... and this is also why it is so important that you contribute to Front Rage's "Save the Wild Horse" campaign.
Recently we purchased a facility in Larkspur Colorado to enable us to rescue and find adoptive homes for mustangs and domestic horses at risk of being sluaghtered.
colorado, the horse, who was once a member of coud's herd is just one of many wild horses Front Range has found adoptive homes for in the past year.
You could say that colordo was particularly forunate because he was adoptied by singer Sheryl Crow, but all of out horses are lucky because the alternative is usually a miserable journy to, and subsequent death at the slaughterhouse.
in the past few months, Front Range has rescued many titled mustanges that were headed to slaughter plants. Ironically, the government claims these horses were successfully adoped, but in each case unscrupulous owners were trying to make a fast buck by selling the horse they adopted from the BLM to a killer-buyer.
I think you'd agree it is better to find adoptive homes for these mustangs than let them go to sluaghter. but, like you, I would strongly prefer that we stop the roundups so our horse freinds can live freely as nature intended.
This is why FRER hoined with Ginger Kathrens' Cloud foundation in 2006
to sue the BLM for the mismanagement of Cloud's Famous herd in the pryor Mountains of Montana.
we took leagl action because of government plans continue, cloud's herd and many other wild horse herds will not survive!
Tiy see, a lot of herds - including Cloud's - are already below there genetic viability according to sources such as Texas A&M geneticist Gus Cothran.
I urgently need your support today becuse the BLM and other government offivails appear hell bent on rounding uo every wild horse i nthe west...and they don't seem to care how many eventually go to slaughter.
as Anna Sewell says in Black Beauty "if we see cruelty or wrong that we have the power to stop, and do nothing, we make ourselves sharers in the guilt."
That's why I hope you can give $1,000, $500,$250, or $100 to help Front Range save wild horses.
if you can send $100, I will send you a DVD set of Cloud's Herd as seen on the PBS Nature Series and a special, limited Edition T-shirt.
yes, I know this is a large donation, but Front Range has incurred many costs in setting up its new rescue facility for the horses and in finding new homes for all the horses we've rescued.
if you can make a donation of $250 or more, I would like to list your name permanently as a BENEFACTOR at our new rescue facility.
Plus, I would like to send you an autographed copy of Ginger Kathren's, Cloud: Wild Stallion of the Rockies, and her more recent book Cloud's Legacy: The Wild Stallion Returns, as seen on PBS Nature Series. We'll also send you a DVD set and a Front Range "saving America's Mustang" t-shirt
if you can send $100, I will send you a DVD set of Cloud's herd as soon on the PBS Nature Series and a Special, limited adition t-shirt.
And for donation of $35, I will send you a Saving America's Mustang" T-shirt so you can show your support from protecting wild horses.
Of course, any donation - no matter how large or small- will be put to good use, and please don't forget to sign and return to us your petition to hte Secretary of the Interior. Thanks!
Sincerely
