It’s Not That Sample
Chapter 1
Sam opened her blue eyes to the sound of her dreaded alarm. Another day. Just as the one before, thank god it was Friday. She slipped out of bed with a low moan, She walked slowly to the mirror morning routine slowing entering her sleepy brain. Sam looked in the mirror to see her blonde hair was still somewhat intact and her small barely five foot frame was still short and skinny. She rummaged threw her dresser grabbing a shirt that said ‘Horse work before homework’ and a pair of jeans. Pulling her straight blonde hair into a ponytail she called it a day, or at least a good hair day. She walked into the kitchen to see it was empty again, with mom at the office and dad with the cows she was left to fend for herself.. Which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.
Sam walked into the large barn a bag of carrots in hand. She threw the bag on the counter in the feed room then headed out towards the pasture. Being all by herself meant she had to bring in, feed and water over 50 horses, then clean all the stalls. With a sigh she ran out to the 50 acre pasture that 15 horses called home. She had recently come up with a system. She had ropes leading from each gate to the barn. She’d run out open the gate then run in and usher them into their stalls. It worked even better when the stablehand wasn’t hungover or high and her put them into the stalls, but that was a rarity. She opened the gate and let four horses through walking behind them to herd them into the barn. When she arrived at the barn Sam almost had a heart attack, there in the barn was a sober Ty letting horses in with ease. “Morning” said Sam in a now cheerful voice.
“Morning” said Ty closing the last door then embracing her with a hug. What the heck thought Sam as she gave him a light hug back. “I’ll run out and you can open doors, I think you know who’s stall is who’s better then I do” said Ty with a small smile before jogging back to the pasture. Sam stood there almost stunned , god had given her one awesome morning so far. Maybe the luck would continue and he’d actually clean stalls.
In record time Sam had managed to do the chores, thanks to Ty’s help of course. She haltered Ben one of the farms stallions then led him into the oversized arena. Sam loved Ben, he was totally smart and a superb athlete. Been There Done That was his registered name, which had been Sam’s idea after he’d survived a hard childhood with an abusive owner. Now the Arabian x Warmblood was so amazing you’d never know where he came from.
Sam swished the lunge whip as Ben cantered around her. He licked his lips and bowed as if saying I trust you. She flicked her lunge whip lightly telling him to canter on and he gave a snort in protest but continued to canter. She took a step back after a few more minutes and softened her stomach, inviting him in. He came in head low ready to do anything for her. She unclipped the lunge line and was about to mount when Ty ran into the arena and said “you have 30 minutes until your bus comes”.
“Oh nuts” said Sam.
“I’ll put Ben away for you” said Ty with a reassuring smile. He hid the fact that he wanted to laugh hearing her say that dirty word. It was amazing how she wasn’t 14 anymore, she was 18. He simply missed the days when she smiled and laughed at all his stupid jokes and back then she wasn’t near as stubborn. Back then the three years difference had been obvious, now it looked like she was older. Since two nights ago when he’d almost ODed he was realizing he needed to give all the drugs and partying up. Almost killing himself had brought him back to reality.
“Thanks so much” said Sam giving him a quick friendly hug.
“No problem” he said taking the reins from Sam and leading Ben back into the barn.
Sam ran out of the house in her clean blue jeans and baby blue V-neck tee to see the bus driving off. She sank don’t slowly on the porch step wondering how she was going to get herself out of this mess. “Not again” muttered Sam. She’d missed the bus last week, she couldn’t imagine what kind of trouble she’d be in now.
“What’s wrong? Miss the bus?” asked Ty holding out his hand to help her up.
“Yes, again” said Sam in a grumpy tone.
“I’ll drive you”
“No I’ll drive there, you’ll drive home” said Sam grabbing her bag and walking towards the truck.
“I miss the days when you couldn’t drive” muttered Ty sliding into the passenger seat.
“I don’t” said Sam with a smile before turning the key. The old truck started with a rumble and soon they were exiting the driveway.
Chapter 2
Chapter 2
Sam walked down the crowded hallway her backpack overflowing with books. On each side of her were mobs of kids and behind them rows of blue lockers. Sam walked onto the yellow bus mainly full of pigs, dirts and just plain weird people. Sam walked toward the back until she recognized a face. Brookes brown curly hair hung down to her chest, her boat neck tee and jean mini skirt made her body look gorgeous. Brooke stood 5’7 making Sam look like a shrimp.. Which she was. “How was your day Brooke?” asked Sam as she sat down.
“Meh. Same old, boring and pointless. Yours?” said Brooke staring out the window.
“Good I guess. Hey don’t you have soccer on Fridays?”
“Oh crap! See you later” said Brooke grabbing her stuff and running off the bus. Sam slumped in her seat.
“Great I’m left with the boys” muttered Sam. Around her the jocks were talking about their girlfriends and taking turns checking out Sam. Sam just rolled her eyes at them and slid over to stare out the window. Her head bumped against the bus as they went over a speed bump well exiting the school. Sam was relived was they pulled up to her driveway. She was happy to see the white 4 board wood fences that surrounded the property and the big fancy black gate that said Symphony Stables on it. Sam could see the two brick horse barns, the black wood dairy barns and the two story brick house she called home.
Sam jogged up the driveway throwing her books on the ground. She ran to the barn to see Ty was still there. “Why aren’t you out partying?” asked Sam. Sam was very blunt when it came to people.. Well when she was saying something she wanted to say or wanted to hear the answer to.
“I gave it up. I almost ODed a couple of nights ago” said Ty ashamed of himself.
“Oh my god!” said Sam, tears rolling down her cheeks.
“ It’s okay, I’m not touching alcohol or drugs for along time” Ty said wiping the tears from her face then giving her a hug and holding her next to him.
“You better not” said Sam softly against his chest.
“I promise” said Ty. Sam lifted her eyes and smiled softly. Ty never made promises unless he was going to keep them.
“Look at you two lovebirds!” said Kristen, Sam’s mother.
“We’re not..” started Sam but stopped when she realized they looked to guilty.
“So Sam new horse, your job” said Kristen in her normal stuck up voice.
“Em k” said Sam not moving an inch. Kristen left nose in the air heading for the house. “The only reason I believe she’s my mother is her hair”
“Trust me I have my doubts”
“Wonder what she brought me now” said Sam pulling away softly and walking toward the new horses stall. Sam didn’t really want to get into a conversation about how much of a pregnant dog her mother was. Ty took the hint and followed her down the long barn. Sam took a deep breath before looking into the 16’ by 16’ stall. There in the back was a horse covered in mud and missing patches of hair. Sam couldn’t even make a good guess at what colour the horse was. She almost cried at the sight of the 16hh horse. Sam knew she needed to help this horse and fast.
Chapter 3
Sam sat in the barn office surrounded by mounds of papers. Her laptop was on a pile that she was using for a desk, although it looked like she was doing homework she was really doing horsework. Sam needed to know what had happened to her new equine friend.. Sadly it wasn’t easy. She searched many horse rescue centres, people charged for equine abuse and more. But so far nothing, not even a hint. Across from her on the office computer was Ty trying to find an ownership transfer, scanned check of something to help but so far he’d came across zip, zero, nothing.
“Bridget O’Neil” said Ty scribbling down an address on a peace of paper.
“Let’s go” said Sam out the door before Ty could even say ok. Ty ran after her and went to his truck opening the door to see nobody.
“Sam!” hollered Ty.
“Over here dufus” said Sam honking the horn of the white Ford four door pickup truck with the Symphony Stables logo on it. Ty shut his door and ran over to the white truck sliding into the passenger seat. “Ready?” asked Sam pulling onto the road.
“I guess” said Ty knowing he really had no chance at stopping Sam once she had her mind set on something. And this something needed to be done.
They pulled into a driveway that led to a run down horse farm with a fallen down barn and a barbed wire fenced pasture the size of a bedroom. “This is sickening” said Sam in a low voice.
“Yes it truly is” said Ty as the truck came to a slow stop and Sam turned off the engine. Sam opened the truck door and went up to the front door, Ty trailing a few steps behind her. Her mind rushed with images of the poor horse, who now lived at one of the finest stables in Ontario, getting caught in the fence well trying to escape the hell she called home. Sam mentally shivered at the thought. Sam took a deep breath and raised her hand to knock but before she could open and a greasy haired brunette stood there staring at them.
“I’m Samantha Richards from Symphony Stables” said Sam with a warm smile.
“I’m Ty the stablehand at SS”
“I’m Bridget. What are you here for?” she asked looking at the two as if they were sales people who had been to her door everyday for the past week.
“I’m here to ask you a few questions about your Old horses past” said Sam unsure of what to say or do.
“I see. I know nothing about her” said the women arrogantly.
“Well at least answer me this, why’d you sell her?” said Sam trying to pry a few sentences out of her.
“She was a rescue horse, there was a horse trailer crash and I adopted her. She was just way too much work. Anyways I’m busy so goodbye” said Bridget slamming the door in their faces.
“Queen Street equine tragedy. I remember that article in the Wheatly newspaper. I have a feeling this horse is worth a lot more then she looks” said Sam running towards the truck. Ty didn’t bother ask, interrupting her would just be giving her an excuse to tell him to shut up. Whatever Sam was planning, she’d tell him or he’d see her do it.
Chapter 4
Sam opened the mud covered horses stall door and let herself in. Now that she was in the stall Sam could see it was a mare and that she had a few white spots. The mares head shot up sending adrenaline to her brain, the she reared. She’d obviously been taught to disrespect people. Sam slowly let herself out of the stall and closed the stall door. She couldn’t work in that small for space with that kind of mare.. It was asking to be killed. Sam needed to get this mare into the arena, into an open space. But how? She saw Ty moving gates around. Probably replacing an old one. That’s when she realized what she had to do.
Sam secured the last gate and nodded to Ty who opened the stall door. The mare ran out head high ready to kill anything in her way, she followed the path and ended up in the arena where Sam quickly closed the gate locking her in. The mares head lowered slightly but not enough to say she was really relaxed, the mare was clearly tense. Sam grabbed a sign that said ‘please use other arenas’ and hung it on the gate, the last thing she needed was a border trying to move this mare.
Sam stepped into the arena a red lunge whip in hand. She casted it towards the mares flank sending her forward. Her head high and ears pinned meant the mare was angry and no where near relaxed. The mare lashed her teeth at Sam and threatened to kick. Sam cast her whip more aggressively at the mare, showing her who was boss. Sam spent hours doing the same thing over and over before the mare finally stopped rearing, bucking, kicking and just being disrespectful. She motioned for Ty to lay down a trot pole, he looked at her curiously but followed directions. Once the mare went over the pole a few times her head dropped and she started licking and chewing. “Mission accomplished” said Sam in a low voice. She then softened her stomach and drew in the mare. The mare came in with her head low and yawning. Another horses realizing that not all people are out to hurt them.
Sam softly brushed the mare that was so relaxed you could have done anything with her. The mare was a beautiful white with small brown dots randomly placed on her coat. The article had now came back to Sam, this mare worth about 100 dollars now was worth 100 thousand dollars then. From Grand Prix to slaughter house.. It’s amazing how people can waste talent just because they have a ‘problem’. Sam slowly combed threw out the mares tangled and disastrous mane. After awhile she finished and unclipped the lead rope she let the mare wonder around the arena freely, since it was her ‘stall’.
“What’s her name?” asked Ty as Sam hauled the gates back to their original place.
“I really have no clue” said Sam setting the gate down. “I think I’m going to look up the article after supper” thought Sam aloud.
“Uhh.. Supper was three hours ago” said Ty pointing to the dark sky.
“Great, I’m stuck with Mac and Cheese again” said Sam as she walked down the isle way making sure everything was ready for tomorrow morning.
“You could come to the restaurant with me..” suggested Ty with a shrug. He was starving and she went with him it’d be like a safety net, if one of his old friends showed up he wouldn’t be tempted to have a drink.
“Sure” said Sam then adding “I’ll go get changed.”
“Can I borrow your bathroom to get changed?” asked Ty even though he practically lived and SS.
“I guess” said Sam with a smile.
Chapter 5
Sam walked into the restaurant wearing blue jeans and a red halter top. Her straight blonde hair layed loose down past her shoulders and bounced softly and she walked. Ty followed close behind her wearing jeans and a blue and white striped polo. His shaggy dirty blonde hair was messy yet neat as usual. “I guess we just seat ourselves” said Sam walking over to a table for two and sitting down.
“I guess,” said Ty sitting down across from Sam. They both looked around the busy restaurant for a waiter.
“How may I help you?” asked a brunette girl in a waitress uniform, who had startled the two.
“Oh.. I’d like a coffee please” said Sam figuring she’d need the caffeine to stay awake.
“Pepsi for me please” said Ty flipping through a menu the waitress had handed them. The waitress then wandered off to get their drinks.
“Thanks for bringing me here, anything is better then mac and cheese lately” said Sam.
“Hey, it’s no problem it beats eating by myself again. How’s your dads cows anyways?”
“Sam old, he wants me to show dairy 4H again this year. I think I’ll go out to the barn tomorrow and pick out my calf”
“He should hire someone to show his best calf. You always pick the one that has the best personality”
“What can I say I’m a sucker for personality, unlike you Ty”
“No you’re just really bad with cow conformation”
“Well as long as I can tell a calf from a cow that’s all that matters”
“That is if you never become a dairy farmer”
“I think running one of the best horse farms in Ontario is good enough for now”
“For now being the key words”
“Have you decided what you want to eat yet?” asked the waitress interrupting their playful comments.
“A cheeseburger and fries please” said Sam. The waiter had caught her off guard, She’d been so caught up in the playful argument that she had totally forgot about the menu.
“Make that two please” said Ty. The waiter scribbled on her pad and walked away after placing down their drinks.
“Man I totally forgot about ordering” said Sam with a small laugh.
“Same”
“If I had even been remotely thinking I would have followed you up in the truck so you didn’t have to drive me home” said Sam feeling bad about making him pay for all that gas.
“It’s no problem really”
“But it’s a long way to make you drive me to my house then you drive all the way home”
“I asked you to dinner and I intend to take you home without any guilt in that pretty little head of yours”
“Fine drive me home but you’re staying in the guest room”
“I can never win with you”
“I know”
“Need anything else?” asked the waiter as she set their plates down and once again interrupting their playful argument.
“No thanks” said Sam. The waiter then walked away not even waiting for Ty’s answer. Sam lowered her voice and softly said “Ty…I uh think you have some visitors.” Sam just pointed to his truck where a group of about five teenagers stood around his truck. Ty stood up fists clenched and walked towards the door.
“Ty” said Sam getting up and hurrying her pace so she was beside him. When they arrived at the truck it was covered in eggs and one of the boys was about to key the side door.
“Oh hey Ty. This your truck? Sorry about this” said the guy holding the key. He then dug the key into the side of the truck leaving a deep scratch. “Whatcha gonna do now?” taunted the boy. Ty stood their anger flaring.
“Hey beautiful” said another boy wrapping his arm around Sam’s waist. Sam turned to him and slapped her hand across his face.
“I may be beautiful but I’m defiantly not yours” said Sam walking towards the restaurant. She then stopped and turned on her heel saying “ Ty you invited me to dinner and I expect that you eat at the same time as me.” Sam sent Ty a glare that told him she wasn’t impressed with this, one bit. Ty glanced at the boys, the truck and Sam. He followed Sam back into the restaurant, she was right.
“I didn’t need your help” said Ty sitting down.
“Five against one sounded a tad far fetch for me” said Sam angrily. They both ate in silence, Sam to angry to speak and Ty knowing that saying anything to Sam would make it worse.
